Singing Lessons
1 on 1 Lessons
1 on 1 lessons are a really great way to develop the voice. I teach in 2 month blocks which normally works out to be 8 half- hour lessons.
After the consultation, the student will in initially sign up for 2 months worth of lessons. The reason that I suggest two months is that it is a really good time frame.
If you are new to singing, it takes a little while for the new concepts and ideas to filter through your brain to your voice and if you have had lessons before it takes a little while to get use to a new teacher with new terminologies and ideas.
Either way by the end of two months , generally my students have a much greater understanding of how to use their voices, safely, effectively with the correct amount of support and breathing. They are much more aware of how to produce a sound of ‘good quality’ even if they don’t manage it everytime, they have much more of an idea of HOW to fix it, having learned how to analyse what is going on in their voice!
Obviously as you can tell, to gain this much in such a short period of time, the lessons are fairly intensive!
It is my goal though, to be able to balance teaching technique with fun! It would be very dull indeed to be forced to just sing classical arias or opera if you were clearly not that way inclined, for tehnical purposes!
Obviously there needs to be vocal development so technique needs to be taught, but at the same time there has to be the fun side; a joy to singing and the enjoyment of it! I use a lot of varied eclectic repertoire for this side of things, from Jazz to Music Theatre ; contemporary to classic, from Jason Robert Brown to ‘The Music Man’!!
Being a performer myself, I have ‘real time’ knowledge and can advise budding artistes!
For more advanced students, a longer lesson may be available and we can work at more complex skills, such as performance skills, languages, exam repertoire and the like.
I feel that a good teacher is someone who can not only teach all the ‘technical stuff’ but someone who is inspiring, and instils confidence and above all else, makes singing enjoyable.
I design each student’s lessons to his/ her individual requirements, tastes, and character. Together we set realistic goals and targets to work towards.
If a student wants to sit exams, that’s great, and if student is just singing for pleasure, that’s also great. Either way, with a bit of dedication the student will soon see their progress.
My schedule is fairly flexible so I can cater for daytime or evening lessons.
